Integrated hearing protection

The ear is a very delicate part of the body and some of the damage that noise can cause is often nonrecoverable. The latest figures from HSE show that during 2011 150 instances of work related hearing loss were assessed. However, as hearing loss is cumulative over a period of years, many individuals will not realise that their hearing is being affected.

To try and reduce the problems from work related hearing loss, the European Physical Agents (Noise) Directive 2003/10/EC came into force in 2006. In simple terms, the Directive requires that noise has to be eliminated and that if this is not possible hearing protection should be available at 80dB, and must be worn at 85dB.

JSP supply a full range of hearing protection to meet the needs of industry, to the requirements of to EN352 -1, EN352 -2, or EN352 -3,: 2002 as appropriate.

When selecting hearing protection it is essential to be aware of national laws, regulations, customs and practices. The points that should be considered are required sound attenuation, certification mark, wearer comfort and compatibility.

Ear Muffs EN 352-1

Ear-Muffs consist of two ear cups that are filled with sound absorbing foam. Each cup has a soft pad that is either foam or foam and liquid filled. The ear cups are held in place by means of a tensioning headband.

Ear Plugs EN 352-2

Ear-Plugs are inserted into the ear canal to seal the entrance.

Helmet Mounted Ear Defenders EN 352-3

These ear defenders are specifically designed to be mounted on industrial safety helmets. They are adjustable, so they can be positioned over the ear when required, or ‘parked’ away from the ear at other times.

Performance is assessed by attenuation testing. This requires a wearer to sit in an anechoic chamber and be exposed to various frequencies and decibel levels of noise. From this testing the detail of how a particular ear protector performs is established. Hearing protection should be selected by comparing this information and the results of a noise survey.

When selecting hearing protection, the wearer should be aware that, unlike in many forms of PPE, it is possible to have too much protection! The wearer still needs to be able to hear warning sirens and approaching vehicles for instance.

JSP InterEX™ & InterGP™

JSP has added the new InterEX and InterGP helmet-mounted integrated hearing protection ranges to its collection of integrated PPE.

The company says its joined-up approach to PPE ensures that the new ear defenders do not compromise the head protection provided by the operative’s helmet. Both the InterEX and InterGP are said to fit firmly to any safety helmet with universal slots, while they are also compatible with JSP’s Surefit visor system.

The following video presents an overview of JSP Ltd’s latest safety helmet accessory. The InterEX™ and InterGP™ are helmet mounted ear defenders.

Available in an extra-visibility orange version, both models have strong, adjustable stainless-steel arms, so that the cup can be positioned for maximum effect, explains JSP.

With its extra-large cups to fit all sizes and shapes of ear, the InterEX is said to offer protection for high noise levels. According to the company, the cups boast high impact resistance and toughness, while the clips ensure the defenders are securely mounted to the helmet.

The InterEX, with a single number rating (SNR) of 29, is said to be suitable for conditions where dB levels are up to around 110, such as when using nail guns or disc cutters, or in foundries. The general-purpose InterGP has a SNR of 25 and is suitable for use in drilling concrete or sandblasting, or in the food industry, where dB levels are between 80 and 90.
